All kayak classes take place in sit-on-top Ocean Kayaks with the exception of our Beginner Whitewater course which takes place in whitewater play boats. Courses can be tailored to your interests - just let us know! Focused course possibilities include:

Stillwater Kayaking


Spend a full day or an afternoon learning about still water kayaking while enjoying the quiet beauty of the water. Topics covered include water safety, basic gear review, risk and safety management, paddling techniques, paddling locations, how to take care of personal needs, basic navigation, and land and water mounts and dismounts.

Ocean Kayaking

Come spend a full day experiencing the thrill and beauty of kayaking in the open ocean. Topics covered include gear review, ocean navigation, taking care of personal needs, water safety and risk management, efficient paddling techniques, marine animal identification, effects of changing weather and tides, surf entries and exits and how to transport your boats.

Beginner Whitewater Kayaking

Come spend a full day learning the basics of whitewater kayaking. The morning is spent in a heated pool learning basic paddling techniques with a focus spent mastering the basics of the eskimo roll. The afternoon is spent in a classroom environment talking about river navigation including entries & exits, scouting, water safety & risk management, how to handle your boat, and gear review. Can be combined with a day trip on Class I-III whitewater.

Beginner River Kayaking

Class I, II, III river conditions with topics covering area familiarization, river entries and exits, route finding, self rescue, water safety and risk management, paddling techniques, how to transport boats and gear review.

Kayaking Course Locations & Times

All our kayaking courses take place take place throughout various locations in California, Arizona depending on season & trip selection. Please contact us for specific details.

Unless indicated otherwise, all courses are full days meeting at 8AM and going until 5-6PM.


To-Bring List for All Kayaking Classes

  • Clothes that can be layered, e.g. fleece top, rainshell top
  • Lunch - 3 liters recommended
  • Water
  • Sun protection, i.e. Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc...


Kayaking Course Prerequisites

Stillwater Kayaking -- No prior experience necessary. Weight not to exceed 280 lbs.

Ocean Kayaking -- Some prior kayaking recommended (2-4 prior trips), but not necessary. Weight not to exceed 250lbs.

Beginner Whitewater Kayaking -- No prior experience necessary, class is designed for the total beginner or as a refresher.

Beginner River Kayaking -- Some prior kayaking recommended (2-4 prior trips), comfortable swimming 200 yards, weight not to exceed 250 pounds.
