EQUIPMENT AND SURROUNDINGS:
- Is the kayak and safe and in good condition?
- Is the kayak set up properly for comfort and efficiency?
- Do you have the correct type of kayak for the conditions?
- Know the nearest phone in the area, or carry a cell phone in a water proof bag. (wrap a wash cloth around the phone in the event of condensation of moisture breech into or from the dry bag)
- Know any emergency contact information for the area.
- Carry a first aid kit in a dr
y bag or box.
- Carry signal devices (flares, strobes), a compass and dry bag.
- Tow line and throw bag.
- Plenty of water and food.
- Have proper clothing for heat, cold and wind.
SAFETY TIPS:
- Always paddle with a partner.
- Know the rescue and capsizing techniques for the specific kayaks being used.
- Know your fellow paddlers' fitness level, swimming ability and medical concerns.
- When paddling in larger groups, it's good to have a safety paddler in the front and the back of the group.
- Try to plan your kayak trip so the tide, current and the wind will assist in your return trip.
- Have at least one person in your group that that is trained in First Aid o
r CPR.
KNOW THE WATER:
- Refer to maps or the marine charts of the area in which you are paddling.
- Know the prominent landmarks in the area (piers, jetties, buildings, etc.)
- In the ocean, be able to identify reefs, wave size, tides, currents and safe entry and exit locations.
- In rivers, be able to identify safe entry and take out locations, rapids, shallow water, water falls, eddies, and knowing all the different classes of rapids (1-6).
KNOW THE WEATHER:
- Check for storm and wind warnings lifeguards, marinas' or on NOAA channels.
- Be aware of rain or fog that can cause poor visibility.
- Check the direction of wind and its velocity (on or off shore winds can effect the size off the swells in open water).
- Knowing the air and water temperatures can help with outfitting and planning of activities.
HAVE A TIME SCHEDULE:
- Plan the duration of your paddle and a safe turn around time.
- Know what time the sun sets, and have lights and strobes on hand just in case you're out after dark.
- Leave a plan with someone before you set out on what to do and when to do it if you aren't back by a predetermined time.
